Dependent (over 18 years) Permit

About applying for dependent permit

If you are a child of a South African citizen by naturalisation over the age of 18 years and want to relocate to South Africa, you must apply for a dependent permit.

If your parent/s is a South African citizen by birth or descent, you do not have to apply for permanent residence status.

Children of Permanent residence holders do not qualify under this category.

What you should do

  • Apply at any nearest Home Affairs office or at a South African Foreign Offices if applying abroad.
  • Complete forms B1-947 and B1-29, if you have a representative.
  • Bring the following:
    • valid passport 
    • medical and radiological reports
    • birth certificate 
    • police clearance certificate
    • change of name or gender documents i.e. statutory declaration, deed poll or legal adoption certificate
    • yellow fever certificate, if applicable
    • valid temporary residence permit if you are in the country
    • marriage certificate or in the case of a foreign spousal relationship, proof of official recognition issued by the authorities of the foreign country of the applicant
    • an affidavit of a spousal relationship to a South African citizen or resident if applicable as well as documentation proving cohabitation, financial responsibilities shared by the parties and setting out the particulars of children in the spousal relationship
    • proof of a union recognised in terms of the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act, 1998 (Act No. 120 of 1998), if applicable
    • divorce decree, if applicable 
    • proof of court order awarding custody, if applicable 
    • death certificate, in respect of late spouse, if applicable
    • written consent from both parents, or sole custody parent, if applicable with proof of sole custody
    • proof of legal adoption, if applicable
    • legal separation order, if applicable.
  • Your parent/s is required to submit: 
    • identity document
    • permanent residence permit 
    • financial support to you
    • naturalisation certificate.

It may take six months to finalise the application.
