Apply for UIF adoption benefits

About applying for UIF adoption benefits

Are you an employed contributor to the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and legally adopted a minor child?

You can claim adoption benefits if you legally adopt a child younger than two years old and you leave work to look after that child. Only one of the adopting parents can apply for benefits.

To qualify for the benefits, you must be receiving less than your normal remuneration (wages/salary) while you are on adoption leave.

If you are contributing to the UIF monthly, your benefits will be calculated by multiplying your monthly remuneration by 12 and dividing it by 365. If you are contributing to the UIF weekly, your benefits will be calculated by multiplying your weekly remuneration by 52 and then dividing it by 365.

You will be paid benefits from the date the court grants you an adoption order, and you must claim within six months of receiving the court order.
