Admission of older persons in residential facilities

About registering as a community based caregiver

If you wish to provide a community-based care and support service to older persons, you must apply at your nearest Department of Social Development Office on a form identical to Form 2.

The Department provides funding and support to organisations that offer a range of services to individuals and families infected and affected by HIV and AIDS. These organisations provide Home-based/Community-based care services to ensure that the basic needs of people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHAs) are met.

What you should do

  • If you do not know of any residential facilities, go to your nearest Department of Social Development office to identify the nearest residential facility.
  • Complete and return application forms at the residential facility.
  • Submit the following:
    • South African identity document
    • Medical report.
  • You will undergo a screening test to determine if you qualify for admission and a subsidy.
  • If you are too old or sick to travel to the office to apply, ask a family member or friend to apply on your behalf.
  • A home visit to assess your current living condition will be arranged by a social worker.
  • If your application is not approved you must give a reason in writing, you can appeal to the Minister of Social Development.

Please note: Admission to an older persons residential facility is subject to availability of beds.

Your application will be processed within 14 days and you will get a response to your admission within 30 days after you submitted your application.
