Renew your motor vehicle licence

About renewing your motor vehicle licence

You must renew your motor vehicle licence every year before it expires. If you fail to renew your licence, you will be liable to pay late licensing penalties and arrears.

You get a 21-day grace period if you have not renewed the expired motor vehicle licence. The grace period is calculated from the expiry date of the current licence disc. You must renew your motor vehicle licence at your appropriate registering authority or at a selected post office that is located within your jurisdiction.

Bi-annual motor vehicle licence renewal:

Buses are subject to renewing their licence discs every six months due to their certification of roadworthiness which is valid for six (6) months only.

What you should do

  • If your vehicle is used for public transport or is a heavy load motor vehicle, a certification of roadworthiness must be done. If not, the licence and roadworthy certificate disc will not print.
  • Go to your nearest registering authority or selected post offices and take the following with if you are an individuals: 
    • your identity document
    • motor vehicle licence renewal notice (MVL2). If you do not have the renewal notice, complete form ALV (Application for Licensing of Motor Vehicle)
  • If you are an organisations, bring the following:
    • organisation’s business certificate
    • Identity Document of proxy
    • letter of proxy
    • Motor vehicle licence renewal notice (MVL2). If you do not have the renewal notice, complete form ALV (Application for Licensing of Motor Vehicle
  • Pay the licence assessment fee specified on the notification.
