C-Max prison becomes museum

Visit the C-Max Prison Museum in Pretoria to get a glimpse of how condemned prisoners were executed in the past.


Over 4000 prisoners, including 132 political prisoners were hanged at the prison between 1921 and 1989. The execution chambers of the prison have now been converted into a museum.

The names of all the inmates who were hanged at the prison are to be engraved on plaques and displayed at the gallows. There will also be murals and pictorials telling stories of what happened.
