Apply to rectify erroneous details in your identity document 

How to rectify erroneous details

You can correct erroneous information on your identity document (ID) by submitting the correct documents to Department of Home Affairs. Examples of erroneous details include your date of birth, the spelling of your names, surname or your photograph.

What you should do

  • Go to your nearest Home Affairs office or to the South African embassy or mission if you abroad.
  • Complete form DHA-526, DHA-309 and DHA- 9
  • Submit the following:
    • copy of identity document (I D) or the incorrect id document
    • two photographs for the issuing of a new ID book
    • proof of correct information of:
      • date of birth e.g. Hospital letter, maternity certificate, clinic card, letter of first school attended, or a baptismal certificate if baptised before the age of five years
      • place of birth
      • gender description
      • proof of correct spelling of names.

Timeframe

Applications may take between three to four months to rectify erroneous details on NPR.

How much does it cost

This service is free if the department made the error on your id book.
