About terminating your pregnancy (abortion)

If you are pregnant and you do not want to keep the baby, due to circumstances known by you, then you can have an abortion.

An abortion is when a pregnant woman decides to end her pregnancy before it reaches its full term. An abortion can be done by medical or surgical means.

Note: You can only have abortion if you are under 12 weeks pregnant.

What you should do

  • You should visit your local clinic or a professional medical practitioner.
  • The clinic or a professional medical practitioner will discuss the abortion procedure with you.
  • Fill in forms at the clinic, including your medical history and the period of your pregnancy.
  • You will receive pre-abortion counselling and post-abortion counselling at the clinic.
  • The medical practitioner will examine you to determine how far you are with your pregnancy.
  • The medical practitioner will prescribe a safe method of termination.
  • A date will be set for admission at the hospital to perform the abortion.

How long does it take

  • An abortion is done on the day of admission.
  • You will be discharged shortly after the procedure unless there are complications.

It is free at public health facilities. Private health facilities charges a minimum fee.
