About registering of a medical aid scheme
To register a medical scheme, you must apply through the Council of Medical Schemes.
The Council of Medical Schemes must ensure that:
- members of board of trustees and the principal officer of the proposed scheme are fit to run the scheme
- scheme will be financially stable
- scheme has enough members
- scheme will not unfairly discriminate against any person because of race, age, gender, marital status, ethnic or social origin, sexual orientation, pregnancy, disability and state of health.
- If your application is approved, the registrar will give you:
- a certificate of registration
- a copy of the rules for medical aid schemes.
If the application is rejected, the registrar will explain in writing why the medical aid scheme was not approved.
