About registering as an import agent for genetic material

Register as an import for genetic materialTo be a genetic material import agent, you must register with the Registrar of Animal Improvement. As an import agent, you must be importing genetic material on behalf of a genetic material registered company.

To qualify as an import agent, you must:

  • Have a facility with equipment for the handling of animal genetic material
  • Have a laboratory and customs clearing facility
  • Be competent in the handling of semen.

You must download and fill in the form below and contact your provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), and ask for a Veterinary Officer. The Veterinary Officer will inspect your facilities and your competency if you qualify to be a registered agent.

The Veterinary Officer must stamp the form on page 2, section 8; certifying that you are qualified. The Veterinary Officer must include their SAVC Registration No.

What you should do

  • Download the application form below and fill it in. You must only fill in page 1, section one to seven. You must also sign on page 2.
  • Contact your provincial DAFF, and ask a Veterinary Officer to come and inspect your facilities and competency.
  • Pay the prescribe fee to: The Director-General of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Standard Bank, Account number: 011219556, Branch: Arcadia, Branch number: 000845/010845. Ref: Your name and surname
  • You can email, post or hand-deliver your application form, attached documents and proof of payment.
    • If you are emailing your application, you must scan the application form, attachments and proof of payment and email to: lesibanama@daff.gov.za.
    • If you are posting your application, you must post it to: Private Bag X343, Pretoria, 0001.
    • For hand-delivery, you must take it to Agriculture Place, 20 Beatrix Street, Arcadia Pretoria.

How long does it take

It will take 30 days for your application to be processed.
