About registering as an employer with the UIF
If you have employees who are employed by you for more than 24 hours per month, you are required by law to register with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and contribute towards the Fund.
You must deduct and contribute one percent of your worker's gross salary per month. One percent is paid by the worker and one percent by you as an employer.
The total contribution is two percent of the worker's gross remuneration (wages/salary).
Note:
- The UIF applies to all employers and employees excluding public servants, employees who are employed for less than 24 hours a month, learners, foreigners who at the end of their contract are expected to be repatriated to their place of origin and commission earners.
- A domestic worker is an employee who performs domestic work in the home of employer, and includes a:
- gardener
- person employed by a household as a driver of a motor vehicle; and
- person who takes care of any person in that home, but does not include a farm worker.
