About applying for the issuance of a phytosanitary certificate for exporting plants and plant products

To export plants and plants products, you must apply for phytosanitary permit issued by the National Plant Protection Organisation (NPPO) of the importing country.

You must find out what are phytosanitary import conditions of the importing country that will apply to your plant products. If the goods comply with the import requirements, the NPPO will issue a phytosanitary certificate.

The plant products must be exported with the original phytosanitary certificate.

What you should do

  1. You must complete application form for  issuance of a phytosanitary certificate and send it to: National Plant Protection Organisation ,Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), Private Bag X258, Pretoria, 0001 or Harvest House, 30 Hamilton Street, Arcadia, Pretoria 0083
  2. pay a prescribed fee electronically or at the department: The bank details are:
    Standard Bank
    Account name: Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries: Import of controlled goods
    Account number: 011251735
    Branch name: Arcadia
    Branch code: 01-08-45
  3. you must take the plants and plant products to the National Plant Protection Organisation (NPPO) for evaluation and inspection at your nearest Inspection Services office.
  4. Make sure that original phytosanitary certificate goes with the goods when exported.

It might take about 48 hours to process your application provided there are no additional activities.

How much does it cost

  • Within official hours: R160 per certificate
  • After hours: 
    • weekdays from 16h00 - 20h00/ 06h00 - 07h30 and Saturdays from 06h00 - 20h00: R240 per certificate 
    • weekdays and Saturdays from 20h00 - 06h00, Sunday and public holidays: R320 per certificate

NB: That the above tariffs is amended on an annual basis.
