About registering for motor vehicle testing station (VTS)

To register a vehicle testing station (VTS), you must write a declaration stating reasons for your registration and submit it to the MEC.

A VTS is a centre that tests motor vehicles fitness for use on the South African public roads. If the vehicle passes the test, certificate of roadworthiness will be issued.
Once your application is approved, the following must be met:

  • your VTS must comply with the minimum requirements for testing stations as stated in Schedule 4 of the National Road Traffic Act No.93 of 1996
  • the ability to test and examine a motor vehicle in terms  of “The testing and examination of motor vehicles” as shown in SANS 10047
  • the examination and testing of a motor vehicle at the testing station as required in code of practice SABS 047 "The testing of motor vehicles for roadworthiness".

What you should do

  • Go to your nearest registering authority
  • complete application form TS1
  • submit the following:
    • declaration document
    • particulars of the members or directors
    • the exact location of the station
    • the grade of the station
    • your identification document (ID)
    • pay the prescribed fee.

Note: You may be required to submit documents as required by the MEC.
