Application for registration as a driving instructor

About applying for registration as a driving instructor

To become a legally recognised driving instructor in South Africa, you must be registered with the Provincial Department of Transport. Driving instructors are required to have a certificate specifying the class of vehicle they are qualified to instruct learners in.

To apply, go to any driving licence testing centre (DLTC) where you will be given a date to write a training test. If you pass the test, you will be given a certificate indicating which vehicle class or classes you are authorised to instruct learners in.

You will deal only with the class of motor vehicles you are licensed for. The instructor’s certificate is valid for one year.

What you should do

  • Go to the nearest driving licence testing centre with your Medical certificate form (MC) to book for a test date.
  • Complete an Application for registration as a driving instructor form (RI).
  • You will be referred to a police station to obtain a clearance certificate.
On the date given for the test, you will write the test. If you pass, you must pay the prescribed fee.

The testing centre will refer your application to the MEC for approval or rejection. If approved, the testing centre will issue the permit.
