About motor trade permit and number

To drive an unregistered vehicle on a public road in South Africa, you must first apply for a motor trade permit and number.

This requirement applies to manufacturers, importers, builders, motor transport contractors, financial institutions or motor dealers who want to sell, exchange, repair or deliver vehicles to their clients.

What you should do

• Go to the nearest registering authority with the following:
• copy of your identity (ID) document or a letter of proxy if you represent a company
• business registration certificate if you represent a company
• prescribed fee.
  
• Complete form MTN1 (Application for Motor Trade Number) at your local registering authority.
• Indicate why you need trade numbers and stipulate the number of trade numbers you need.
