Application for registering with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF)

Description

Any employer who employs a person and in return remunerates them either in cash or in kind must register with the Fund as soon as he or she commences with business activities.  It is the responsibility of the employer to register his or her workers and to make the necessary 2% monthly contribution to the Fund.  The contribution is made up of 1% from the worker’s remuneration and 1% from the employer.

Steps to follow

  • It is the responsibility of the employer to complete all relevant forms and forward them directly to the UIF to register his or her business as well as the workers.
  • There are various ways in which to register with the UIF:
    • Registering online
      • Have the identity numbers (ID) of all your workers and the physical address of the business (place of employment) on hand.
      • Complete online registration forms.
    • Registering via e-mail
      • Complete form UI-8 (for business employers) or the form UI-8D (for domestic employers) to register the business with the UIF.
      • The employer must complete form UI 19 to register workers.
      • Domestic employers: email the forms to the UIF at domestics@uif.gov.za.
      • Commercial Employers: Email the forms to the UIF at webmaster@uif.gov.za.
      • The UIF will issue a unique reference number as confirmation of registration.
    • Registering via telephone
      • The employer must have the physical address of the business and the ID numbers of all the workers ready before contacting the UIF.
      • Contact the UIF at 012 337 1680 and follow the voice prompts.
    • Registering via fax
      • Call the UIF fax line from your fax machine at 086 712 2000 and follow the voice prompts. Wait for the forms to be forwarded to you.
      • The employer must complete form UI-8 (for business employers) or the form UI-8D (for domestic employers) to register the business with the UIF.
      • The employer must complete form UI 19 to register workers.
      • The UIF will issue a unique reference number as confirmation of registration.
    • Sending forms through the mail
      • Completed forms can be mailed to the UIF at:

    • Postage is payable on all mail sent to the UIF.
    • Registering at a labour centre
      • Visit the nearest labour centre with the ID numbers of workers and the physical address of the business/place of employment
      • The employer must complete form UI-8 (for business employers) or the form UI-8D (for domestic employers) to register the business with the UIF
      • The employer must complete form UI 19 to register workers
      • The completed forms must be handed in to the Labour Centre
      • The UIF will issue a unique reference number as confirmation of registration.
