Application for a letter of authority in respect of a motor vehicle

Description

You must obtain a letter of authority if you intend to import a new or used vehicle, goods vehicle or trailer and build or modify a vehicle.

You must have the letter of authority irrespective of whether the vehicle was built in South Africa or in a foreign country. Types of vehicles for which a letter of authority is required:

  • cars, buses and motorcycles
  • goods vehicles (trucks or vans)
  • trailers
  • special vehicles such as mobile cranes, tractors, harvesters.

All motor vehicles, whether manufactured in South Africa or imported, must conform to the requirements as set out in the National Road Traffic Act, 1996. Importers must also submit proof of conformity to the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS).

Note: Only the person in whose name the vehicle will be registered may complete the application form.

Steps to follow

  • Obtain the relevant application forms from the SABS.
  • Complete the forms and attach the following documents:
    • copy of Identity Document
    • letter of proxy in the case of company or organisation
    • affidavit for the build-up motor vehicle from the South African Police Services. This should include the engine and chassis numbers, full details of the work carried out and source of major (especially safety-critical) components
    • South African Police Service clearance certificate
    • roadworthy certificate
    • weigh bridge certificate
    • two photos of the motor vehicle.
  • Pay the required fee.
