Description

Anyone who wishes to keep buffalo must first register the land with the Department of Agriculture.

Steps to follow

  • Download and complete the application form in print. It can also be obtained from the local state veterinary office.
  • Request the local state veterinarian to inspect the land and fences and confirm the disease status of the buffalo.
  • The head of veterinary services in the province must testify that sufficient resources are available to monitor conditions on the farm on a regular basis, that all buffalo movements onto and off the farm can be handled appropriately and that it will be possible to follow up irregularities without delay.
  • The application must be accompanied by: 
    • an official certificate of adequate enclosure issued by the nature conservation authorities
    • a copy of a map showing the exact extent of land applied for.

Service standard

The time taken for the application to be approved varies from one province to the next. Once the application has been approved, it is sent to the national Department of Agriculture.

Officials at the national department provide an official registration number, add the information to the national buffalo register and print a registration certificate for the owner of the land. This process may take ten working days.
